From paper queues
to digital check-in.

A national ID scanning and visitor management system I built from scratch for the Egyptian Military Judiciary Authority.

The problem

Two notebooks. One long wait.

Security staff searched a large notebook of names and national ID numbers to check whether a visitor was barred from entry. If the visitor could enter, staff copied their name and ID number into a second notebook to record the visit. This manual process contributed to average waits of over an hour.

My contribution

Built from scan to server.

I built the frontend, backend, OCR integration, and administrator portal, then deployed the system to the authority’s Windows server using IIS. The system digitized visitor records and gave administrators tools to manage visitors, entry restrictions, and user access.

How the system works

    Scan the front and back of a visitor’s national ID.

    Extract

    Read the national ID number, name, address, and job through Tesseract.

    Store

    Save the extracted information and both card images in a database.

    Manage

    Give administrators tools to review visitors and manage entry restrictions.

Next.js and React power the frontend. A Node.js and Express API handles the backend, with a separate Python Flask API integrating the Tesseract OCR engine to extract the visitor’s information.
